Privacy policy

Excel Monitor is designed for local operation. The intent is simple: run the tool without exporting your data.

Last updated November 3, 2026. This policy covers the Excel Monitor desktop app.

Data collection

Excel Monitor does not collect personal data, usage analytics, telemetry, or behavioral tracking.

Data transmission

While it has a valid license key, the app never connects to the internet or to any server of mine, and sends nothing to any external service. The only network traffic is reading the workbook, logos or PDF from a network share, if that’s where you keep them. A licensed board doesn’t need an internet connection to run.

Without a valid key (none added yet, or an expired one), the app is locked and shows its license screen. Each time that screen opens, it makes one plain HTTPS GET request for nicholascabel.com/software/excel-monitor/prices.json, so the plans and prices it lists match the website. Nothing is sent with that request: no key, no workbook data and no identifier, and the app sends no user agent. Like any request to a website, the server’s standard logs record the PC’s IP address and the time. Licensed installs never contact the site.

The only other time anything goes online is when you click a link in the app, such as Help or the subscription page, which opens that page in your web browser. Those pages are part of nicholascabel.com, which, like the rest of the site, uses Google Analytics (GA4) to count visits. That is the website only: the app itself never loads it or sends anything.

Local file access

The app reads the Excel workbook you choose (.xlsx or .xlsm), plus any logo images and PDF you point it at. It only reads them and never modifies them, and it opens the workbook in a way that lets other people keep editing it in Excel at the same time.

What’s stored on the PC

To pick up where it left off, the app keeps a few small files in %LocalAppData%\ExcelWatcher for the Windows user: the license key, the location of the chosen workbook, a copy of the last PDF shown, a record that the software agreement was accepted, and the error log described below. Display preferences (which TV this is, slide speed, full screen and any renamed labels) are kept in that user’s registry under HKCU\SOFTWARE\ProductionMonitor. None of this leaves the PC, and deleting it resets the app.

Logs

If something unexpected goes wrong, the app adds a technical entry (the time and the full error details, which can include file paths) to error.log in the folder above. The log stays on that PC and is never sent anywhere. You can delete it at any time.

Licensing

Licensing is enforced through keys, checked on the PC itself. Nothing is checked online, and the key never leaves the PC. Without a valid key the app shows only its license screen until one is added.
